    SecureBoost Hyperparameter Tuning via Multi-Objective Federated Learning

    SecureBoost is a tree-boosting algorithm leveraging homomorphic encryption to protect data privacy in vertical federated learning setting. It is widely used in fields such as finance and healthcare due to its interpretability, effectiveness, and privacy-preserving capability. However, SecureBoost suffers from high computational complexity and risk of label leakage. To harness the full potential of SecureBoost, hyperparameters of SecureBoost should be carefully chosen to strike an optimal balance between utility, efficiency, and privacy. Existing methods either set hyperparameters empirically or heuristically, which are far from optimal. To fill this gap, we propose a Constrained Multi-Objective SecureBoost (CMOSB) algorithm to find Pareto optimal solutions that each solution is a set of hyperparameters achieving optimal tradeoff between utility loss, training cost, and privacy leakage. We design measurements of the three objectives. In particular, the privacy leakage is measured using our proposed instance clustering attack. Experimental results demonstrate that the CMOSB yields not only hyperparameters superior to the baseline but also optimal sets of hyperparameters that can support the flexible requirements of FL participants.Comment: FL-ICAI'2

    Ultrasonic spot welding of open-cell Cu foam and Al plate: A study on the quality of joints

    As a type of novel material, open-cell copper (Cu) foam has been widely applied in electrode production of batteries, due to its functional and structural properties. The use of ultrasonic welding technique to join Cu foam and aluminium (Al) plate has been proven to be feasible, but quality evaluation of the joints remains a blank to be filled in. In this study, orthogonal test design is used to investigate the effects of welding pressure, welding amplitude, welding energy and the interaction among the three parameters on the shear-tensile strength of ultrasonically welded joints of Cu foam/Al plate, and it is influenced by the three parameters in the following order: welding pressure > welding energy > welding amplitude. Based on the results of the orthogonal test, a Cu foam/Al plate ultrasonic welding joint evaluation system is established, based on which, qualitative and quantitative analysis on the quality of the joints classified the joints into three grades. The optimal parameter combination of the welding joint of Cu foam/Al plate is obtained as follows: 0.5 MPa, 65 %, 130 J, under which the porous structure of the joint is complete while its tensile strength is equal to or even better than the base material

    Efficacy and safety of intranasal agents for the acute treatment of migraine: a systematic review and network meta-analysis

    Abstract Background Intranasal agents may be ideal for the treatment of migraine patients. Many new acute intranasal-specific therapies have been developed, but few of them have been directly compared. The aim of this network meta-analysis (NMA) was to compare the efficacy and safety of various intranasal agents for the treatment of acute migraine in adult patients. Methods The Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, and PubMed were searched from inception to 15 August 2023. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using intranasal agents (no restrictions on dose, formulation, dosing regimen or timing of the first dose) to treat adult patients with acute migraine were included. The primary efficacy endpoint was pain freedom at 2 h, and the primary safety endpoint was adverse events (AEs). The analysis process followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Results Nineteen studies (21 RCTs, 9738 participants) were included. Compared to the placebo, 5 mg of zolmitriptan using a conventional liquid nasal spray device was the most effective for pain freedom at 2 h [odds ratio (OR): 4.67, 95% confidence interval (CI): 3.43 to 6.43] and 24 h (OR: 5.49, 95% CI: 3.58 to 8.42) among all the interventions. Butorphanol nasal spray 1 mg was the most effective (OR: 8.62, 95% CI: 1.11 to 66.92) for pain freedom at 1 h, but with low-quality evidence. DFN-02 presented the highest freedom from nausea (OR: 4.95, 95% CI: 1.29 to 19.01) and phonophobia (OR: 5.36, 95% CI: 1.67 to 17.22) at 2 h, albeit with lower odds of achieving complete pain freedom. ROX-828 showed the highest improvement in freedom from photophobia at 2 h (OR: 4.03, 95% CI: 1.66 to 9.81). Dihydroergotamine nasal spray was significantly associated with the highest risk of AEs (OR: 9.65, 95% CI: 4.39 to 21.22) and was not recommended for routine use. Zavegepant nasal spray demonstrated the lowest risk of AEs (OR: 2.04, 95% CI: 1.37 to 3.03). The results of sensitivity analyses for the primary endpoints (pain freedom at 2 h and AEs) were generally consistent with those of the base case model. Conclusions Compared with other new intranasal-specific therapies in treating migraine attacks, zolmitriptan nasal spray 5 mg was the most effective agent for pain freedom at 2 h. Zavegepant nasal spray 10 mg had the fewest adverse side effects

    2019nCoVAS: Developing the web service for epidemic transmission prediction, genome analysis, and psychological stress assessment for 2019-nCoV

    Since the COVID-19 epidemic is still expanding around the world and poses a serious threat to human life and health, it is necessary for us to carry out epidemic transmission prediction, whole genome sequence analysis, and public psychological stress assessment for 2019-nCoV. However, transmission prediction models are insufficiently accurate and genome sequence characteristics are not clear, and it is difficult to dynamically assess the public psychological stress state under the 2019-nCoV epidemic. Therefore, this study develops a 2019nCoVAS web service (http://www.combio-lezhang.online/2019ncov/home.html) that not only offers online epidemic transmission prediction and lineage-associated underrepresented permutation (LAUP) analysis services to investigate the spreading trends and genome sequence characteristics, but also provides psychological stress assessments based on such an emotional dictionary that we built for 2019-nCoV. Finally, we discuss the shortcomings and further study of the 2019nCoVAS web service

    Overcoming the Low-Stability Bottleneck in the Clinical Translation of Liposomal Pressurized Metered-Dose Inhalers: A Shell Stabilization Strategy Inspired by Biomineralization

    Currently, several types of inhalable liposomes have been developed. Among them, liposomal pressurized metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs) have gained much attention due to their cost-effectiveness, patient compliance, and accurate dosages. However, the clinical application of liposomal pMDIs has been hindered by the low stability, i.e., the tendency of the aggregation of the liposome lipid bilayer in hydrophobic propellant medium and brittleness under high mechanical forces. Biomineralization is an evolutionary mechanism that organisms use to resist harsh external environments in nature, providing mechanical support and protection effects. Inspired by such a concept, this paper proposes a shell stabilization strategy (SSS) to solve the problem of the low stability of liposomal pMDIs. Depending on the shell material used, the SSS can be classified into biomineralization (biomineralized using calcium, silicon, manganese, titanium, gadolinium, etc.) biomineralization-like (composite with protein), and layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly (multiple shells structured with diverse materials). This work evaluated the potential of this strategy by reviewing studies on the formation of shells deposited on liposomes or similar structures. It also covered useful synthesis strategies and active molecules/functional groups for modification. We aimed to put forward new insights to promote the stability of liposomal pMDIs and shed some light on the clinical translation of relevant products

    The Microbial Community Composition and Nitrogen Cycling Metabolic Potential of an Underground Reservoir in Rizhao, Shandong Province, China

    Constructing underground reservoirs has emerged as a crucial strategy to address the shortage of fresh water in Rizhao, Shandong Province, China. However, the water quality, microbial community composition, and biogeochemical cycling of nutrients in underground reservoirs compared to raw water remain unknown. To unveil the characteristics of microbial community structures and their nitrogen cycling metabolic potential in coastal underground reservoirs, we utilized a functional gene array (GeoChip 5.0) in conjunction with high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and 18S rRNA genes. Our findings indicate that the water quality in the underground reservoir exhibits a certain degree of eutrophication compared to raw water, with higher concentrations of TN, TP, NO3−N, NO2−-N, and Chl a, but lower concentrations of DO and NH4+-N. The alpha diversity of bacterial and microeukaryotic communities was significantly lower in the underground reservoir. The bacterial community presented a stronger correlation with environmental factors than the microeukaryotic community. Regarding the relative abundance of bacterial communities, Gammaproteobacteria dominated the bacterial community in raw water, while Gammaproteobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria dominated the bacterial community in underground reservoir water. Additionally, the relative abundance of Nitrospirae was noticeably higher in the underground reservoir water. Moreover, we found significantly higher sequence abundance of the archaea Thaumarchaeota in the underground reservoir. Furthermore, our analysis revealed that, except for the amoA functional gene, which significantly increased the metabolic potential of nitrification, the metabolic potential of other microbial nitrogen functional genes was significantly reduced. This reduction may contribute to the lower concentration of NH4+-N in the underground reservoir. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the microbial community characteristics and their nitrogen cycling metabolic potential in underground reservoirs. It serves as a valuable reference for water source selection, the formulation of water quality assurance measures, and the construction and management of underground reservoirs for subsequent impounding

    The aim of this study was to identify the ultrasound features and clinicopathological characteristics of basal-like subtype of triple negative breast cancers (TNBCs).This study was approved by the ethical board of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University. The patients' clinicopathological information was available. The ultrasound features of 62 tumors from 62 TNBC patients were interpreted. The immunohistochemical results of cytokertain5/6 (CK5/6) and Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) were used to classify the tumor into basal-like and normal-like groups. The association of the ultrasound features interpreted by experienced ultrasound doctors with the immunohistochemical classification was studied.Of the 62 TNBC cases, 42 (67.7%) exhibited the basal-like phenotype and 20 (32.3%) exhibited the normal-like phenotype based on the immunohistochemical CK5/6 and EGFR markers. Of all the tumors, 90.3% were invasive carcinomas. The basal-like tumors were significantly associated with a maximum diameter on ultrasound of more than 20 mm (36, 85.7%) (P = 0.0014). The normal-like tumors usually exhibited lateral shadows (15, 75%) (P = 0.0115) as well as microlobulated margins (12, 60%) (P = 0.0204) compared to the basal-like subtype. Other ultrasound features showed no significant differences between the two groups.Although ultrasound cannot yet be used to differentiate between the basal-like subtype and normal-like subtype of TNBC, ultrasound can be used to provide some useful information to the clinicians
